Functional Definition: 

The Transportation and Outreach Specialist supports the food access programs of CHS, including both the Food Pantry and Café Commons. The Specialist is responsible for coordinating purchased and donated products across CHS programs. The Specialist also supports the maintenance and execution of pantry distributions. This role includes providing logistical support, helping to manage teams of volunteers, and providing excellent customer service to pantry customers.

The Specialist is supervised by the Food Pantry Coordinator and works consistently with the Food Pantry Specialist, Community Integration Liaison, and kitchen staff. This position requires a blend of teamwork and autonomy to ensure the food access programs operate efficiently and effectively to reduce food insecurity among CHS customer.

Full time employment benefits include; Health, Dental, Vision, Generous PTO and Holidays. Life Insurance/STD/LTD, and 403(b) if working over 20 hours per week. The position pays an hourly rate of $14.00.

Responsibilities and Duties: 
  • Work with Café Commons and Food Pantry staff, volunteers and interns to accept, unload and properly store deliveries of product.
  • Support distributions by ensuring volunteers are trained and customers are being served in a timely manner.
  • Engage with pantry customers and ensure distributions run smoothly.
  • Troubleshoot any issues with pantry customers.
  • Make referrals to other programs, both within and outside of CHS.
  • Effectively communicates and coordinates schedule and responsibilities with supervisor and colleagues.
  • Safely transport purchased and/or donated product using large company vehicles from many sites.
  • Properly maintain all vehicles including: cleanliness of vehicles, ensuring that all problems are reported to supervisor and director of maintenance, vehicles are adequately filled with fuel, etc.
  • Assists with the ordering of food and supplies as needed on a weekly basis to support the café and pantry.
  • Meets internal and external reporting requirements for both donations and pantry customers.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of programming at WSC as needed.
  • Develops and maintains contacts and relationships with organizations and businesses in the community to maximize donation and volunteer opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Experience driving and operating large motor vehicles up to 10,000 lbs GVWR within the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, including ability to pass a driving skills test.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices and standards of food transportation and handling.
  • Physically able to bend, lift, and carry 50 pounds to unload food from a van and stock shelves.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Sensitivity and cultural competence with individuals in need of program services.
  • Computer literacy with working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record for insurance purposes.
